Map Highlight: Oberon by BurnOut64

There are certain hidden gems among the classic Sven Co-op map arsenal that pop out every so often. Oberon stands out among old school Sven Co-op maps through its detailed design and setting. It really packs the punch visually, comparatively speaking. It also has the classic combat feel when you play through it; lots of monsters in one spot that you and your friends have to sludge through. That can actually get annoying and it should have gotten old by now, though since it was released in 2004 I give it a pass on that. It is a hardcore gameplay map; a level for which you need friends to complete.

Near the starting point

It also has a hardcore approach to working out the puzzles and gaps between combat...

SC Servers See Ranking Boost After Purges Cheaters

Sven Co-op servers might benefit from the publicity of top-rank exposure on after a few of the top-ranked servers were de-ranked due to their use of bots and fake clients which were reported as normal players. It’s a technical way of saying they were cheating in order to get into the competitive level of server rankings. In addition, the ones that were not flagged have apparently removed their bots, so perhaps this will give Sven Co-op servers a leg up by being on the top page, even if it has only affected the top 4 servers, which were boosted up to 5, 9, 14 and 22, as can be seen on the server page.

Top 10 Most Popular Servers in Sven Co-op 2017 (2nd Edition)

This is an update from an earlier post, but I wanted to set it properly to the end of the year. There has been a big upset in the rankings, as you might see.

1. [ES] Half-Life Campaigns

The [ES] Half-Life Campaigns server continues to dominate the top spot and is #3 in Half-Life server rankings. It has a very consistent population average of 12. There are players in it at every time of day. Basically this is the only server where you’ll see upwards of 20 players at 3 AM in the morning.

2. [PE] LeTongue

The huge upset comes from a new server on the block, straight from Peru. LeTongue seriously outperformed the old 2nd-place star, Twilight Zone. This server is basically classic Sven Co-op with some novelty plug-ins.

3. twlz | Twilight Zone

Twilight Zone used to be one of the “two titans” of ...

Glow Plugin for Sven Co-op

An Angelscript plugin for Sven Co-op with a simple set of colors. This is a classic plugin. Typically players who are bored use it to pretend that they aren’t bored. All it does is make you glow a certain color, but it’s fairly popular. It’s similar to the trail plugins. Download it here.

To glow say “glow <color>” in chat; <color> should be replaced with a standard color (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.)

Counter Strike Weapon Mod for Sven Co-op

If you feel that the standard weapons are getting kind of old, or you just want to ramp up your arsenal, you should check out the Counter-Strike Weapons plugin for Sven Co-op. It contains all the classic CS 1.6 firearms. The only caveat is that they have to be configured for map-specific instances, as far as I know, because weapon plugins in Angelscript only apply to the maps that the plugins are used in. Download it here.

Here is some footage posted by the plugin authored by KernCore:

Map Highlight: Dark Nebula by Onox792

Every so often there are maps created by up and coming authors that are exemplary cases for the notion of “first maps” or those first few maps a level designer makes to stumble about the engine, figuring out what’s right and wrong. Dark Nebula (sc_darknebula) happens to be one of these.

As has been underscored the map certainly does not warrant a critical review, as it’s more of an introductory attempt on the part of the author, but it’s certainly something beginning level designers should follow in terms of the combinations of gameplay and visual design. The mapper makes a clear attempt to brush the interiors with enough detail that you’re not passing through rooms that summarily look like boring cubes...

Say Chat Sounds: the Sven Co-op Radio Mod

Players of the old school remember using RadioMod on TFC or CS 1.6 in an “AdminOP-esque” server set up. It’s a lot more convenient in Sven Co-op, actually. All you have to do is install the Angelscript plugin. Download it here.

For those of you who are not familiar, what happens is that when you say a “linked” word in text, anything like “lol” or “hello”, a sound file associated with that word will play. It’s a pretty silly plug-in but people on fun and minigame servers seem to like it.

Top 10 Most Popular Servers in Sven Co-op for 2017

Here’s a yearly top listing. I decided to do something nobody has really done before. It took a while to keep tracking of the numbers, so tell me if you like it. Here are the top 10 most popular servers in Sven Co-op. My popularity rates are based on player averages from and as well as trend lines.

#1: [ES] Half-Life Campaigns

Player Average: 16
Peak: 28
Trend: Up

[ES] Half-Life Campaigns is basically the go-to server for playing Half-Life cooperatively. It’s the behemoth of Sven Co-op. It’s also the 3rd most popular Half-Life Server* and the most popular Sven Co-op server of all time. Players here are from all over the place and it’s a very universal server in that sense...

Map Review: Shockraid Jungle by GreenTea

Typically Sven Co-op players aren’t used to any attempt to bring some immersion into a level and the routine is to go through the level like a mouse looking for the cheese in a maze; there’s a hallway so I’m going to go through it. It’s never the contrary: my surroundings are very interesting or awesome. Probably because half the maps in the game take on the same simplified variations of the “pre-Lambda-Complex” palette: rugged industrial corridors that are dulled, grayish compositions of unaesthetic metal and concrete. It brings on the same feeling you get when you’ve gone through the “On a Rail” chapter from Half-Life a few dozen times. This is probably why my eyes light up when I see something bright and unique, like Shockraid Jungle.

Gameplay Rating: 3.5/5

Shockraid Jungle is a fairly ...

Trail Plugin That At Least Sort of Works

It’s probably a good idea to switch over any AMX X plugins that (used to) work over to their Angelscript equivalents if they exist. Like any of the trail plugins that used to work before Sven Co-op 4. So a basic trail plugin has been posted but I’ve been testing it and it sure works on a listen server when you’re the host. I’ve had issues when I actually test it on a dedicated server with other plugins that really shouldn’t conflict with it (like AMX X plugins that don’t change entities at all). But as far as I know this is the best we’ve got. At least the plugin comes with customization for new, user-defined colors.
